Christ-in-Me
Though it was cold, I slowly slipped out
of the brown wicker chair and crawled down
onto the front porch floor, lying open
on my back like a cotton-clad starfish.
As I closed my eyes, feeling the fatigue
of too many yeses, my shoulders
made known their screaming, and you
began to sing over my still body—
When I was tired, you let me lie down.
When I was thirsty, you stopped to give me a drink.
When I was hungry, you sat me down to eat...
Thank you.
The Story
An Invitation
What word, phrase, or image from this week’s poem catches your attention? What does it stir in you? In what ways might this word, phrase, or image connect with what you’re currently experiencing in life?
Consider the image above today’s poem. What do you notice? What do you wonder? What thoughts or emotions does the image evoke for you? In what ways might the image illuminate the words of the poem?
Try this simply prayer exercise: If you feel comfortable, find a quiet room, porch, or patch of grass, and lie on your back with your arms and legs outstretched. Close your eyes. Feel of the weight of your body pressing into the ground, and invite the Spirit of God to speak over you. You might consider praying something like, “God, what do I need to hear from you today? Give me ears to hear.”
As always, I invite you to share your thoughts in the comments below. Hearing how each poem speaks to you is always so encouraging, and it presents a beautiful opportunity for honest conversation and dialogue. Thank you for being here, friends!
“too many yeses, my shoulders”
Such a good reminder to lay and rest in the work of God. His shoulders are infinitely more capable of carrying the load.
